A History of Snake Rings

There are of course many styles of rings available to buy today but not many of them are steeped in as much tradition as the snake ring.

Both exotic and unusual people looking to buy diamond snake rings usually have a good idea of what they are looking for and have already made their minds up that it is this particular style of ring they want.

Diamond snake rings are more popular than ever and are beautifully crafted exquisite pieces of jewelry. The shimmering diamonds along the body of the snake give the perfect reproduction of a snake in motion.

Some people are attracted to the mythic archetypal style of snake rings that represent time and eternity more often than not when the tail is being eaten by the head. This image is the Ouroboros, an ancient symbol showing a serpent eating its own tail. The symbol is believed to have been inspired by the Milky Way with ancient writings describing a serpent of light living amongst the heavens.

The circle, which is best depicted by this particular image, has always been an important symbol of ancient civilizations representing wholeness and perfection. The ring without beginning or end also represents the Sun, Moon and Universe.

Many different cultures including Christianity, Hinduism, Aztec, Norse and Chinese depict the image of the snake ring. In Greek Mythology snake rings were worn in honour of the Greek healing god Asclepius who was struck down by Zeus fearing Asclepius would transform all of mankind into immortals with his healing powers.

In the 19th Century the snake or serpent ring was very popular with ladies who found the style enticingly pleasing. The snake rings could be worn in conjunction with a serpent styled bangle, broach or hatpin. As well as diamond snake rings were embedded with rubies, sapphires and many other kinds of gemstones. The Victorians were heavily influenced by treasures gathered in Roman and Greek times. The replicated many of the nuances and were fascinated by their intricate distinctions. The popularity of the ring reached fever pitch when Queen Victoria herself chose the design of a gold sinuous snake, which was meant to give good luck.

Typically diamond snake rings would not be purchased as a wedding or engagement ring unless the future husband was absolutely sure his intended bride would approve. Diamond snake rings are not suited for everyones tastes and a surprise proposal would backfire horribly if the bride were expecting a more traditional style.

The snake ring is best given as a symbolic gesture of good fortune, good health, and as a loving gift to a partner where the ring is a protective charm and represents the union of the couple and their eternal and never ending love for one another.

How to Get Rid of Phlegm

Greek gods

You might want to hold off with that wish. Phlegm is actually good for you. Well, not the thing itself, but what it represents. Phlegm is mucous that becomes congealed and visible. It's almost always a sign of your body fighting off whatever infection is wreaking havoc on your respiratory system - which is actually a good thing. Phlegm is primarily composed of mucous, dead bacteria and virus, dead white blood cells, and various tissues and cells. The difference between phlegm and other mucous is that phlegm comes from your lungs, not from your nasal passages.

In around 400 B.C. it was thought that phlegm was part of the four humours, the four basic substances that were supposed to comprise the human body. The other three humours were black bile, bile, and blood, and when they were balanced, the body would achieve harmony and would thus be healthy. A lack or excess of any of the humours resulted in diseases or disabilities. It was the ancient Greek philosopher Hippocrates (of the Hippocratic Oath fame) who is credited for coming up with this theory. For 2,000 years, it influenced medical thinking until it was discredited in the 1800s.

While phlegm is an indication that your body's immune system is working overtime to get rid of those nasty invaders that are trying to make you sick, coughing up phlegm every few minutes is still a rather unpleasant practice. Here are several things you can do to get rid of the phlegm quicker so you won't have to find yourself in potentially embarrassing and totally awkward situations.

Phlegm Elimination

If you're a smoker, cut the habit. Everyone knows that smoking aggravates and promotes several lung and bronchial problems. As if body infections are not enough, respiratory diseases caused by smoking will give your body additional health issue baggage it does not need. Smoking interferes with your body's ability to fight off any infection, so whatever problems it is currently engaged in that resulted in the formation of mucous will be prolonged. Thus, your phlegm problem will drag on longer. Smoking also kills the cilia that line your lungs, making it harder for you to cough out phlegm. If you've been coughing up brown or gray-colored phlegm, it means that your body is screaming for you to lay off the cigarettes. It would do you well to cut out the filthy habit before those browns and grays become speckled with red - a sure precursor to something serious, like lung cancer.

Treat any nasal or sinus infection that you have. As mentioned earlier, phlegm is just an accumulation of mucous and other dead substances that coagulate and become visible. Mucous isn't a foreign object - your body's airways produce mucous regularly. These mucus secretions don't accumulate because they're regularly cleared to your throat where they are carried down by the saliva. If you have an infection that blocks normal passage to the airways and throat, the mucus doesn't get drained down by the saliva and thus accumulates. Fixing the infection will help fix the additional congestion, easing the accumulation of mucus and phlegm.

Take an expectorant. Expectorants are medicines you can take to clear and loosen up any mucus and phlegm in your respiratory tract. They work by thinning out the mucus so you will be able to easily dislodge it when you cough. Common expectorant medicines are those that contain guaifenesin and bromhexine, so when buying expectorants, be sure to check if these ingredients are present. As with buying any medicine over the counter, be sure to consult with your physician first, just in case you might be subject to complications because of them.

Don't take cough suppressants. Sure, it is pretty annoying when you have a hacking cough every five minutes, causing you to spit out phlegm at pretty much the same rate, but coughing is your body's way of trying to dislodge the phlegm. If you're taking cough suppressants or anything that inhibits your ability to cough, you're essentially allowing the production and build-up of mucus and phlegm in your system since you've basically shut down your body's mechanism to expel them. The sooner you get all the phlegm out of your system, the sooner your coughing will stop, and the sooner you will find relief.

Drink plenty of fluids and liquids. Plenty of liquids and fluids help loosen up any hard, sticky phlegm that is congesting your system. Fluids also help wash down mucus that is regularly deposited on your throat, thereby lessening their chances of building up and coagulating. There are also herbal teas and drinks that help you deal with respiratory problems, and the fewer complications you have, the better your chances of getting rid of respiratory disease effects - mucus and phlegm included.

Spit the phlegm out; don't swallow it. Among the many components that make up phlegm are substances like immunoglobulins and glycoproteins that help your body fight off the infection. When these substances get killed (together with the bacteria and virus they were fighting), they become part of what makes up phlegm. When phlegm gets coughed out, it means that they have served their purpose - remnants and refuse of the battle, so to speak - and are no longer necessary in the proper functioning of the body. They have to be expelled. Therefore, spit them out and don't swallow them back. Aside from the fact that swallowing phlegm is gross and unsanitary, it sometimes gets reintroduced to your pulmonary system, worsening your situation.

There are also home brew remedies you can try that will help in getting rid of your phlegm. Eucalyptus oil mixed with boiling water is a good way to decongest your chest and lessen the abundance of phlegm in your respiratory system. Two to three drops of the oil in boiling water should be enough to do the trick. Hold a towel over your head and deeply breathe in the steam. This will help clear out congested passageways of your respiratory tract, allowing you to spit out the phlegm more easily. Garlic is also said to have expectorant properties, and is considered to be a good supplement for treating congestion.

When your phlegm starts showing up in different colors, it's about time to have yourself checked by a physician. Take a sample of your phlegm for analysis. Different colors usually indicate an underlying condition. Normal phlegm is usually clear and white. Yellow phlegm means that your immune system is functioning properly and is responding to something. Greenish phlegm means that there is definitely an infection in your body. Rusty spots in green phlegm are often an indication of something serious, like internal respiratory micro-bleeding or pneumonia. Brownish phlegm can be a sign of infection, as well as symptoms of too much smoking, as resin is sticking to the phlegm. When this happens, it is always advisable to limit or just stop your smoking habit, as it may be exacerbating whatever respiratory condition you may have.

What If Buddy Holly Had Lived?

February 3rd defined the fiftieth anniversary of Buddy Holly's death, as well as Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper. The legendary plane crash in Clear Lake, Iowa continues to trouble our conscious souls otherwise our society would not persist in honoring these celebrated artists. For example, Hollywood's somewhat biographical depiction of The Buddy Holly Story, an actor's brief rendition of Buddy in La Bamba, Broadway's production of Buddy- The Buddy Holly Story, a new Australian musical which opened on Feb. 3rd of this year, the movie dedicated to one of his song, Peggy Sue Got Married, and of course, the ever-so infamous song, "American Pie." And certainly there is a much longer list of pop cultural influences such as Pulp Fiction, The Simpsons, and Quantum Leap, but I think you get the picture.

Dying at the age of 22, (and how many of us dare to remember our early twenties?), his life had just rose the anchor before sailing off into uncharted waters. He began his rock 'n roll profession in the late 50's when this new and wild music propelled as if a hurricane. Although he wasn't the founder of rock 'n roll, (and it's a difficult journey to track as to whom truly was the founder because the styles of rhythm and blues, boogie woogie, folk, country, and spirituals fused like a nuclear bomb,) Buddy's influences are just as powerful. Even after his death his influences are persevered in the ashes of his wake. But since he had made such a forceful impact, I have to ask the paradoxical question: What if Buddy Holly had lived?

I realize I am NOT the only who has indulged in this kind of musing. Obviously. Nevertheless let's first take a peek at where he came from to the point of his emergence. Now I also realize for those who are die-hard fans, this reflection is something you already know and has become second nature. Be patient and humor me!

It may be common knowledge that he was born in Lubbock, Texas on September 7, 1936, (the same year the summer Olympics were held in Nazi Germany, Roosevelt ran a second term for president, Mutiny on the Bounty won best picture, and the Spanish Civil War and the war in China against Japan were set in motion. Also it was the year that Robert Redford, Jim Henson, Alan Alda, Bobbie Darin, and Michael Landon were born.) Furthermore it might be common knowledge that his real name was Charles Hardin Holley, Buddy being his nickname and that his last name was a misprint on a recording label but he decided to keep the misspelling to save future confusion. He was raised in a musical family and had been playing in a duet since junior high. But how many of you knew that although he played guitar, piano, and the violin, he could not read or write music? And that although he occasionally smoked but didn't drink alcohol due to a stomach ulcer?

Now there are other legendary stories revolving around Buddy and his former band, The Crickets. For instance, picking names of animals and insects for band names were a popular fad, and ironically The Beetles was almost a consideration, but The Crickets was ultimately chosen. Their reasoning: Texas usually harbors millions of crickets, and since Texas was place their of the grass roots, it naturally suited them. In addition to their name, at the end of "I'm Gonna Love You Too," a chirping of a cricket can be heard. And then there's the song "Peggy Sue," which was changed from "Cindy Lou." The drummer, J.I. Allison wanted to impress his girlfriend, Peggy Sue Gerron, after having an argument, but Buddy had wanted to keep the title in honoring both his sister and his niece, both named Cindy. On on bet, Buddy told J.I. that if he could speed-up the beat of the song, then they would change the title. Needless to say, Buddy lost that bet.

Sadly the band parted ways when Buddy wanted artistic sovereignty from the recording studios and moved to New York. The Crickets stayed in Lubbock. Even so, the breakage didn't hinder Buddy from perusing his musical ambitions. He went solo and toured with other celebrities such as Dion and the Belmonts, J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, and Ritchie Valens. The tour had just began, making several stops in the Midwest before the ill fated day had ended it all.

But what if Buddy hadn't made the arrangements to fly in that small plane? What if everyone had either rode the bus or waited until the strong winds passed? In other words, what if Buddy Holly had lived?

Having dealt with the complications and contradictions of the recording studios, before his death his funds were frozen and lawsuits claims that continue even today, Buddy had plans to build his own recording studio called Prism outside of Lubbock and then to create a publishing music company called Taupe Publishing. In fact, he and Ritchie Valens were constructing plans to work together to help record and publish Ritchie's music without the big company's restrictions. This naturally would have liberated various possibilities for those who were dismissed by the bigger companies. Not just for the rock 'n roll industry, but for the world of music in general. In particular, minorities, and perhaps specifically, the Hispanic community. Since Buddy was a Texan, he grew up in a mixed culture, even if his town was predominately white and was named after a former Confederate solider. The Mexican culture is the second highest population and continues to grow.

In spite of the growing Hispanic culture in America, only a handful have actually permeated through mainstream. By the time Buddy emerged into the music scene, there was Ricky Ricardo, Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs, and Ritchie Valens. Following them were Carlos Santana, Gloria Estefan, Selena, (another untimely death,) Jennifer Lopez, Jon Secada, Enrique Iglesias, and Christina Aguilera. Of course they are more I have yet to mention, but he point I'm trying to convey is that by comparison to the majority of musicians in the United States the number is still underdeveloped. Perhaps Buddy could have sponsored a handful more.

I have no doubt he would have been involved with the Civil Rights movement. In high school he named his cat after Booker T. Washington and gave his dog a Spanish name, Alonzo. He and The Crickets played at the Apollo Theater, one of the few white bands to do so in the late 50's. If he became more politically active, how would that have been reflective in his music? The Beatles had started with fun diddles, but the much needed social issues forced America to change and their songs did reflect those challenges. Who knows, Buddy could have also been on J. Edgar Hoover's list which included John Lennon, Charlie Chaplin and remarkable, Eleanor Roosevelt, (due to her public speaking for racial equality. But because Eleanor was the president's wife, the matter wasn't pushed.) The reason Elvis wasn't on that list because Elvis, with sincere intentions for being a loyal American, agreed to give Hoover any names of people he knew in the entertainment world who were suspect of Communism or any other radical ideology.

Buddy probably would have done the Hollywood scene, competing with Elvis, Bobbie Darin, Bobbie Fisher and Doris Day just to name a few. More than likely he would have done the typical romantic-musical comedy bits. But since he was highly intelligent and versatile, it would be interesting to see if his career could have become more serious, dramatic; similar to Frank Sinatra.

Would his old band have reunited with him? After shaking my magic black Eight Ball, most definitely. First of all, when Buddy had left The Crickets it wasn't because of personal clashes which often plague bands with outbreaks of mutiny! And I'm quite sure the guys had missed his company as well as his success which is rumored that they were considering reuniting with Buddy. Not only that, if he was in the process of opening his own recording studio in Lubbock, that would have resolved all of their concerns regarding keeping true to their roots!

Would he have still been married to Maria? Well, that really is a much more difficult question to mull over little alone answer. He did propose to her on their first date after only spending five hours with her. She has been noted to have understood the legalities of the music business and has been a fierce advocate in preserving her husband's music. Being an orphan and raised by her aunt, she never came to terms with Buddy's premature death. She didn't attend his funeral and never has visited his graveside. As she explained to the Avalanche-Journal: "In a way, I blame myself. I was not feeling well when he left. I was two weeks pregnant, and I wanted Buddy to stay with me, but he had scheduled that tour. It was the only time I wasn't with him. And I blame myself because I know that, if only I had gone along, Buddy never would have gotten into that airplane." Because they married so young, it could have gone either way, but there seemed to be a mutual respect for each other that could have remained in a long-term friendship. But Buddy was also raised by a strong, supportive family which would have made him a faithful family man.

Would he have kept his glasses? If he wanted to change his image, and didn't want to deal with eye surgery, soft contact lenses were first created as a prototype in 1961 but would not be ready for commercial distribution in the United States until ten years later. Prior to that, contact lenses were first assembled from glass and hard plastic which made them uncomfortable to say in the least. But it wasn't until 1982 when bifocal contact lenses became available commercially. Nevertheless, by the time technology made contact lenses an easier option, Buddy would have been in the public eye for about twenty years and to see him without his glasses would seem a bit odd. When you think of Buddy, those thick glasses often come to mind! After all, whether intentional or not, those glasses are his trademark!

I'm not the only one who has conceived of this idea of the "what if" paradox. Bradley Denton, another writer from Kansas by the way, wrote a science fiction prophecy called, Buddy Holly is Alive and Well on Ganymede. It's a humorous spin on American culture, comparing Buddy to Jesus' second coming, with a sci-fi swivel that includes the supernatural and aliens. And Denton plays off of Greek mythology of Ganymede, a divine hero who was a Trojan price and was considered so gorgeous among the mortals that Zeus had to have him to serve as an immortal cup bearer to the gods. Boy, you gotta love those ancient Greeks! And talk about a narcissistic complex, right Woody Allen?

Another sci-fi paradox is an anthology series called, Wild Cards, written by various authors on a single theme, also known as a shared universe. This theme, as you can guess, is about Buddy, the divine hero.

So, would his career have survived fifty years? He influenced The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, The Rolling Stones, Elvis Costello, and Bruce Springsteen. His popularity continues to charm our subconscious already, so I would have to say, "yes!" I believe his career would have survived along side of his legacy.

Interesting Facts About the Archangels

The first fact that amazed me about the archangels is that there are 15 of them. I have always considered myself a spiritual, and in my younger days, religious person. However, I had no idea that there were so many archangels. We all know about Michael, Gabriel and Rafael, but there are twelve more. This intrigued me so much that I did a little bit or research and I would like to tell you a little bit about each one of them.

Jophiel - whose name means "Beauty of God." She helps us to add and attract beauty into our lives. She helps us to perceive, with thoughts, the beauty in our lives. She is the Angel of Beauty and Patron Angel of Artists.

Metatron - He is a fiery and energetic angel who has a special place in his heart for children. He is also one of only two archangels who had lived as a human man. While on Earth he was known as Enoch, a prophet and a scribe. The new Indigo and Crystal children are under his guidance. Metatron is known as the Patron Angel of Children.

Michael - "He who is like God." Michael's main function is to rid the Earth of fear. He is the leader of the Archangels. He is the Angel of protection, justice and strength. He is known as the Angel of Protection and Courage and the Patron Angel of Policemen.

Raguel - His name means "Friend of God." His primary role is in Heaven making sure that the Angels and Archangels are working together in harmony and according to the Divine Order. Raguel is considered The Relationship Angel.

Rafael - whose name means "God heals." Rafael is the healer of physical bodies for both humans and animals. He is the angel of love, joy and laughter. He helps to heal your mind, body and soul. He is known as the Healing Angel and Patron Angel of those in the medical field.

Myth About Poseidon's Birth

Poseidon is one of the original Olympian gods out of the six. He is the god of the sea. He is also the god of earthquakes and horses. His parents were Cronus and Rhea; and his siblings were Zeus, Demeter, Hades, Hestia and Hera. Even Homer has referred to Poseidon in his famous epics, Iliad and Odyssey. He was known to shake the world and the seas with his anger and power.

Poseidon traveled the waves in the seas using a chariot drawn by dolphins. Although he was the master of the seas, he was responsible to the king of the gods, Zeus.

In Greek mythology, there are many myths related to Poseidon. Cronus attained the throne by dethroning his father and became the king of the gods. However, it was foretold that Cronus would be dethroned in a similar manner. This made Cronus extremely fearful of this power be usurped. So, he decided to kill all the children that his wife bore. He would swallow them. The same thing happened to Poseidon when he was born -- he was swallowed by Cornus.

However, when Zeus was born, his mother did not show him to Cronus. Instead she hid him on the island of Crete where he attained adulthood. One fine day, after Zeus had grown up, he gave his mother some poison and asked her to give it to Cronus. On drinking the poison, Cronus regurgitated all the children that he had swallowed and thus, Poseidon was born. With the help of Zeus, the children overthrew their father. The Earth was then divided into three parts -- heaven, sea and the Underworld. The heaven was given to Zeus, sea to Poseidon and the Underworld to Hades. In addition, the three siblings also received special weapons, like Zeus had the thunderbolt, Poseidon the trident and Hades the helmet.

Parallels Between Jesus and Horus - Egyptian Sun God

Best viewed in full screen mode.... Summary: In reality, Jesus was the Solar Deity of the Gnostic Christian sect, and like all other Pagan gods, he was simply a mythical figure, However it was the Roman political establishment that sought to historicize the Jesus figure for social control: The Roman emperor Constantine convened the Council of Nicea ( 325 AD) at which the Christian Doctrines were established - and thus began a long history of Christian bloodshed and spiritual fraud. This video was inspired by a film entitled "Zeitgeist- The Movie" The text and pictures Are taken from the film with Great respect. This is a must see film if you Want the truth about religion, 9/11, and the Federal Reserve Bank. Available on the Internet at link.brightcove.com
